St. Ephrem’s Seminary reopened after summer vacation. It cordially
welcomed 26 new comers of which 3 are day scholars from Vincentian
Dukhrana- The day St. Thomas Christians remember their father in faith.
His Excellency Mar Mathew Vaniakizhakkel presided over the function
which inaugurated the new academic year.
Rev. Fr. Sebastian Adappacheril of the Eparchy of Palai joined our
seminary as the resident staff and spiritual director. He holds a
Master Degree in Sacred Scripture from Jnana Deepa Vidyapith, Pune.
Inauguration of the Village Ministry for the academic year 2014-15
took place today.
On the eve of Vianney Day, thirteen newly ordained priests of ETC
came back to their alma mater for the Convocation Day and New Priests
Day. Convocation ceremony took place in the evening. His Excellency
Mar Mathew Vaniakizhakkel presided over the function. Most Rev. Charles
Soreng SJ, Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Hazaribag was the Chief
Today is the feast of St. John Maria Vianney, the heavenly patron
of all priests. Holy Qurbana was celebrated by the new priests.
Voluntary Social Ministry, ‘Premdan’ was inaugurated by
Rev. Fr. Antony Perumanoor in a meeting held after lunch.
This is a day of great ecclesiastical and secular importance. The
Assumption of Our Lady and the 68th Independence Day of our country
are celebrated today. We had a high sung Holy Qurbana in the morning.
Later, national flag was hoisted and a short message was given by
Rev. Fr. Mathew Olickal MCBS. At noon, we had the academy. Mr. Giriraj
Singh, BSNL District Telecom Officer, Satna was the chief guest.
Annual arts and sports competitions in view of the Home Day began
today. Rev. Fr. Thomas Manjalankal MST inaugurated the competitions
and gave a short message on the occasion.
In the evening, we received the poignant news of the resignation of
His Excellency Mar Mathew Vaniakizhakkel as the Eparch of Satna due
to ill health. He was serving our seminary as the Patron till last
year and was appointed as the Chairman of the Synodal Ad hoc Commission
of Bishops for ETC. He is a man of extreme simplicity and has fulfilled
his duties with true pastoral outlook.
It was an important day for the Fourth year theologians as they appeared
for the Moral Theology and Ecclesiastical Discipline Comprehensive
Viva Voce examination.
Today, we celebrated the national festival of Kerala, Thiruvonam.
It was also a day of intellectual feast for the ETC Pariwar, as it
hosted a symposium on the Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium
promulgated by Pope Francis.
The annual Sports Day in connection with the Home Day competitions
was conducted today. Rev. Fr. George Vadkkumcherry, Parish Priest
of Maihar Church, who is also an alumnus of our seminary, inaugurated
the Sports Day.
It was a very special day for the ST. Ephrem’s Seminary as it
celebrated Seminary Day today. In the morning, a high sung Holy Qurbana
was celebrated. Very Rev. Fr. Rector, Thomas Kochuthara was the main
celebrant. Later, in the evening took place the Home Day meeting and
the cultural event. His Lordship Most Rev. Patrick Nair, Bishop Emeritus
of Meerut, was the chief guest. Very Rev. Dr. George Mangalapilly,
Honourable Administrator of the Eparchy of Satna, presided over the
Semestral examinations began today.
Rev. Fr. Philip Chakkummoottil left for Bangalore to attend the Indian
Moral Theologians’ Conference.
Village Exposure Programme (VEP) for the First, Second and Third Year
theologians commenced today.
Today took place the Comprehensive Oral Examination for the Fourth
It was another important day for the Fourth Year theologians as they

Annual retreat began with meditation points after Leliya.
It was a day of mixed emotions for ETC as some of her children were
saying good bye to her. It was the ‘Farewell Day’ for
the Fourth Year theologians.
It was a day of great ecclesiastical importance. The Syro Malabar
Church offered two saintly flowers to the Catholic Church through
the Canonization of Bl. Kuriakose Elias Chavara CMI and Bl. Euphrasia
CMC. They were pronounced saints by Pope Francis in a graceful ceremony
held at Vatican.
Brothers started leaving right from midnight for the Christmas vacation.
In the evening we had the Christmas celebrations for the entire Ephrem
This was a day of immense significance, joy and fulfilment for the
mother ETC as her children moved a step forward to the priesthood.
His Excellency Mar Sebastian Vadakkel, member of the Synodal ad hoc
committee for ETC, conferred the Minor Orders of Karoyusa on 17 of
our brothers and the Hevupadiyakonusa on 12 of our brothers and the
Major Order of Diaconate on 10 of our brothers.
The seminary reopened after the Christmas vacation.
Mission Day celebrations of ETC took place today. Programme began
early in the morning. Very Rev. Fr. Thomas Kochuthara inaugurated
the programme and gave a short but inspiring message.
Today is the Republic Day of our country. After the Holy Qurbana,
all gathered in the front of the seminary for the flag hoisting ceremony.
Rev. Fr. Joseph Edattu VC, Rector of the Vincentian Study House, enriched
all with a moving message.
As per the long standing tradition of ETC, today we celebrated the
Village Day or ‘Ekta Divas’ (Children’s Day) for
the children from neighbouring villages where brothers go for the
Village Ministry on Saturdays. Around 600 children came for the programme.
In the evening after Ramsa the flag blessing of the parish feast of
the Ephrem Nagar church took place. Very Rev. Fr. Thomas Kochuthara,
parish priest, was the celebrant. The next two days are supposed to
be the main feast days.
Procession of the parish feast took place today evening. Message of
the feast was delivered by Rev. Fr. Sebastian Puthenpurayil. Many
people in the Ephrem Nagar participated and sought the intercession
of St. Ephrem.
Today morning we had the most solemn of our Holy Qurbana, i.e. Raza
as part of the parish feast.
Today we had the community picnic to Bansagar, a multi - purpose water
project built by the states of Madhyapradesh, Uttarpradesh and Bihar.
This was the day of Symposium on the ‘Catechetical Vision of
the Syro Malabar Church’. Rev. Fr. Varghese Naickamparambil
VC, Assistant Provincial Superior of the St. Thomas Province of the
VC Congregation inaugurated the symposium in the morning. Rev. Fr.
George Danavelil, secretary of the Syro Malabar Commission for Catechetics
at Kakkanad, Kerala was the resource person.
Today was the Ash Monday. This day marked the beginning of the season
of Great Fast. Sign of the cross with ash was marked on everybody’s
forehead. Very Rev. Fr. Thomas Kochuthara was the main celebrant.
Today, we received the shocking news of the unexpected demise of Rev.
Fr. Varghese Parappilly of the Eparchy of Satna. He was also serving
our seminary in the capacity of a visiting faculty.
Bro. Varghese Kossackal left for Allahabad representing ETC in an
Inter - Seminary Symposium organized by St. Joseph’s Regional
It was an auspicious day for the seminary as the Synodal ad-hoc committee
of Bishops for our Seminary made its official visitation today. His
Excellency Mar Mathew Vaniakizhakkel, Bishop Emeritus of Satna, is
the chairman of the committee. His Excellency Mar Sebastian Vadakkel,
Bishop of Ujjain, and His Excellency Mar Raphael Thattil, Auxiliary
Bishop of the Archeparchy of Trichur are the members.
Study leave and examination days began.
Today we observed the Palm Sunday which marked the beginning of the

Today is the Great Day of Easter. This is the Feast of the Resurrection
of Our Lord which is the very underpinning of our Christian faith.

In a gathering before supper, we bade adieu to Rev. Fr. Sebastian
Adappacheril who returns to his home eparchy after rendering a year’s
service to our seminary in the capacities of a spiritual director
and a professor.
